What Causes Cramps In Leg Radiating Towards Pelvic Area?

My mother is 84 years old and is having bouts of severe bilateral leg cramping. She said the pain goes down from her pelvic bone, down the sides of her legs. She said you can see a dent down her leg when she is having the cramping. She takes a potassium supplement. She recently had a left hip x-ray and it showed she has some mild arthritis. She has been diagnosed in 2001 at Mayo Clinic with Fibromyalgia. She said the pain comes and goes, but is becoming more painful and more frequent. What could be causing this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The cramps in legs radiating to pelvic area can be part of underlying nerve compression at lower spinal level, flare of fibromyalgia or else. In my clinic, after thorough clinical examination (including Straight leg raise test), I recommend MRI spine involving lumbo sacral region of back for best results and further guidelines.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
