What Causes Cramps In Toes, Feet And Calves?

I am a 74 year old white female with no heart, cholesterol, or diabetes conditions. I have arthritis which has resulted in two back surgeries involving laminectomies and fusions. Both surgeries were successful. I have suffered from chronic UTIs the past few years having had no earlier histories. Treatment with Cipro took care of these. My questions is regarding severe cramps in my toes, feet, and calves which started a couple of months ago. I am taking no diuretics and started taking OTC potassium a week ago. What is causing the cramps which are so painful I am awakened at night and must get out of bed?
