What Causes Cramps With Spotting And Gritty Discharge Instead Of Menstruation?

Hi Doctor, I was supposed to start my period and i m having cramps but its only light pink spotting. I ts not a lot of spotting either when I normally have heavy periods for 7 days. Is this normal? I m 23 and I dont remember ever having this gritty discharge.
