What Causes Crippling Lower Abdominal Pain, Constant Burping And Flatulence?

My husband for the past 48 hours has had crippling lower abdominal pain, constant burping and pain when passing wind. His stomach is very distended. He has not experienced any dihorrea or constipation but passed stools frequently yesterday and nothing today. He feels the pain is getting worse. He has never had a headache before and after taking Colpermin he has started to experience one. He has stopped taking Colpermin. Can you advise what action to take or give any indication as to what might be the cause.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM for your query.

Incomplete data; Age, alcohol intake, hot and spicy food, etc.
In view of the problems described in your question my opinion is that your husband is most probably having some sort of irritable bowel.

Following medications are useful in immediate treatment of the irritable bowel:
Mebeverine tablet with Imodium
Other medications which are proved to be effective include Alosetrone, Dicyclomine.
Besides, once his symptoms are controlled he needs some life style modifications and stress management.
Try to avoid foods that trigger your symptoms.
high-gas producing foods like pulses, borroccoli, cauliflower, and gluten containing foods.
Get enough exercise, drink plenty of fluids and enough sleep.

If he does not show any improvement with the above measures, he has to visit a doctor for detailed examination and possible investigations like blood tests, Colonoscopy, etc.
I hope your query has been explained, a feed back is appreciated if you are convinced.
Wishing your husband a quick and smooth recovery.
Regards
