What Causes Daily Cough In A Patient With Mitral Valve Disease?

I was diagnosed 28 years ago with mitral valve condition. I chose not to go on any meds and have just dealt with it. I m 56 now. I have more frequent episodes of rapid, irregular and skipped beats. Now they include feeling lightheaded and very tired before/during/after. And I have this daily cough that I don t know if it s related or not. These episodes seem to have no trigger. I can be resting, active, relaxed, irritated - basically they are just random. I haven t been to Dr about it. But during dental work procedure, they had to stop the procedure, call 911 - because my heartrate went to 256 beats per minute. They gave me some med & oxygen and got me awake. So I thought that might have been related to meds they used. All other episodes have been random. So I guess it is just progressing due to age, but wondering if this cough is related to all this or not. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best possible way. Your complaints suggest you have mitral valve disease and your cough is related to it. You are having symptomatic mitral valve disease like light-headedness, fatigue, cough and Atrial fibrillation (heart rate of 256).
I suggest that you should not take these things lightly and consult a cardiologist who will help you with a long term management plan which may include lifestyle changes, management of comorbidities and certain medications. You need an evaluation of condition of your mitral valve by an echocardiography.
I find this answer helpful
