What Causes Dark And Irregular Periods?

hello, my name is Amie. I am 22 and for the last few months my periods have been off. I was on a normal cycle but in April I was a week late, last month I was on time but had a heavy flow and major clots (which isn t normal for me felt like it had when I had a miscarriage), n now today I just started a couple hours ago but the blood started out bright red and now it s a dark orange color. is this normal? is it just the blood mixing with the mucus. (which I should add I haven t noticed any mucus all day).

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Irregular and heavy bleeding indicates hormonal imbalance which can occur due to ovarian cysts, uterine fibroid, thyroid disorders or anemia. Pelvic ultrasound, thyroid function tests and complete blood count should be taken to rule out all the above cause. Combined oral pills should be taken for a few cycles to regulate your cycles and prevent excess bleeding and clotting.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
