What Causes Dark And Stringy Menstrual Flow?

hi, ive been on the contraceptive pill for a couple of years now. however, due to stress, ive forgotten to take my pill here and there over the past couple of months. i am currently on my 7 day break and my period is like it has never been before. its really dark, clotty and kind of stringy.why is this?
