What Causes Dark Blood Discharge While Passing Stool?

Yesterday, around 7:00 P.M. I used the restroom, and there was blood in my stool. I m not talking a little bit of blood either. The entire toilet was filled with dark maroon colored blood. I know it s gross, and I m pretty embarrassed about it, but I m also terrified at the same time. It wasn t a one time thing either; it continued on. It happened around 1:00 A.M. last night, then at 7:00 A.M., and again around noon today. It is 9:40 P.M. and it happened yet again. This time, I noticed bloody pink and red tissue attached to my waste. It s very alarming. I know I do not have external hemorrhoids. I ve checked. I believe the problem is internal. Please help.

Hi,

Dark stool can represent blood in stools. Fresh blood will give bright red colour to the stool and anal fissure, hemorrhoids and tumours could be the cause. Dark stools may occur in upper gastrointestinal bleed due to ulcers or oesophageal varices, diverticulitis. The cause should be identified. Rectal examination, abdominal ultrasound and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy may be required. Any new drug take should also be taken into consideration since it can alter the stool colour.
