What Causes Dark Brown Vaginal Spotting While On Depo Shot?

Please help! About 3 weeks ago, I went to the bathroom at work. While urinating, something small dropped from my vagina. It was like a tadpole but looked to me like very thick uterus lining, like what you d see on a very heavy period. Since then, I ve had nonstop mild dark brown spotting...not heavy but dark. I am on depo birth control and have been for three years. Could it be miscarriage, or some crazy hormonal imbalance from the birth control?..help!!:(

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Depo is usually very effective if the injection is given at the appropriate time. Like most hormonal contraceptives, it can occasionally be associated with abnormal bleeding so it is possible that this is the case for you.

If it continues, however, it would be best to see your doctor for an assessment which would likely include abdominal and pelvic examination along with vaginal examination as well.

Treatment would depend on the findings

I hope this helps
