What Causes Dark Discharge During Periods After A Long Delay And Inserting Implanon?

My daughter has been on the implanon rod for over a year. She has not had a period in the last six months but three days she started her period and its been brown almost black. Is it possible she could be having a miscarriage? If not what could it be and what does she need to do about it?
