What Causes Dark Discharges With Cramping?

I am trying to conceive for the first time. My cycle varies in length but for the last two have been about 44 days. I am 36 days into my current cycle and for the last two days been experiencing a dark/black type discharge and mild cramping. What could this be

It is not normal to have a cycle length of 44 days and probably indicates that you are having delayed or absent ovulation. A cycle starts on day1 and most women ovulate on day14. When this occurs, you get your period on day28. When ovulation is absent or delayed, breakthrough bleeding occurs and commonly comes out as a brownish dark discharge.
