What Causes Dark Purple Bruise On Left Calf Muscle After Injecting Heroin?

A friend injected heroin into their left calf muscle and shortly after a very large dark purple bruise formed with a grey ring around it. They think they missed the shot but have never had this reaction. It s been 4 days and some of the dark purple has faded to grey and it is hard and starting to form bubbles in the skin. All the while it has stung to the point of limiting mobility and caused them not to sleep. Any ideas?
