Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 23 year old boyfriend showed me some dark spots he found on the back roof of his mouth a while ago. He smokes cigarettes. Im very concerned because not only does he have black spots, he has constant migraines, problems eating, and is always tired no matter how much he sleeps. Im pretty sure this is not normal for any 23 year old.. Should we be worried? Should he go to a doctor as soon as possible? And if he cant what should we do? :(
Dark spots on the roof of mouth is because of excessive cigarette smoking as smoking causes excessive palatal burning and leads to formation of spots known as nicotine palatinus.
This condition is reversible and will come to normal state after stopping of smoking. If these pigments becoming red and causing difficulty in swallowing, eating and causing any itchy and burning sensation then it could be a condition which you need to worry about. It could be because of systemic conditions then.
You should visit your nearby dentist just to make sure that these areas are not because of any serious mouth pathology rather just because of effect of smoke. Dentist will take a sample from these dark spots and will do biopsy for the same to find exact diagnosis and then treatment can be done accordingly.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
