What Causes Dark Stool While On Medication For Anxiety And Back Pain?

Hi, I m a 39 yo mom of 4, I ve had hbp for years which I keep under control with meds. I also suffer from anxiety, back pain, seizures/migraines - I m on 5-6 diff medications. Within the last few years I started having issues with my stomach and stools. They are now black (only a few) I ve had an endoscopy which came back ok, and doc still wants to do a colonoscopy. I m scheduled to see a dr on Monday - just to be clear they aren t like black, black. I ve been paying attention to them for the last few years and now they ve progressively gotten worse. Should I be seen sooner? What could this be? I don t want to jump to worse case scenario?! :(

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, you may need to have a colonoscopy but before that stool for occult blood and CT scan may be asked for any other guidance for the cause. Pain meds for the long term may also cause gastrointestinal tract bleeding. If anything unremarkable, antacids may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
