What Causes Dark Stools?

My stool has gotten very dark the last couple days. I have no stomach pain. I have been diagnosed with and been on Apriso for Colitis for 4 years. No diarrhea in almost 2 years, but I still take 8 Apriso per day. However, at my new primary care doctor s approval I started trying to wean off Nexium almost two weeks ago taking one every other night and I have been on it for YEARS for acid reflux and heartburn. 2 days ago I started getting bad heartburn and about the same time as my stools starting getting quite dark. I used several chewable antacids to make the heartburn subside. Also, same time I started cutting back on Nexium I was given a steroid shot in my fanny for joint pain in my hip and lower back. It did nothing for my pain. I plan to call my PC doc in the morning. My only complaint is being tired and occasionally a little light headed and the dark stools the last two nights.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As per my clinical experience, I suspect GI bleed ( through ulcer or else ) with tiredness, headache which are systemic manifestations of low hemoglobin.
It is recommended to get a stool microscopy for further management guidelines.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
