What Causes Dark Urination While Treating Kidney Stones?

In march my 11 son hard Dark cola colored urine after a soccer game. I brought him to the ER and when he did a urine sample it was clear. Test showed all labs normal. 2 days later after soccer- his urine looked like a glass of merlot colored wine. Back to Nemours children s hospital. A urine sample was taken and, once again, was clear. This time however microscopy was positive for blood. Kidney ultrasound showed 8 kidney stones. Over next several weeks he had mild discomfort in kidneys but never passed a stone that we know of. He has been perfect the entire summer, no complaints, no pain, no discoloration. Soccer season just began and here we go again. Thursday night after practice and again tonight he urinated Coffee colored urine but it goes to clear within an hour. he has no pain- no complaints this only happens after soccer

Hello,

Dark urine may indicate the presence of mucus, pus, or blood. Alternatively, it can be due to sediment that forms when some of the constituents of urine, such as phosphates or urates, form tiny crystals.

If you have no symptoms, then the cloudiness may be due to the presence of normal vaginal mucus.

It would be a good idea to report what you’ve noticed to your GP, and to arrange for a sample to be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

Any blood, pus, crystals, or infection will be reported. If you have symptoms of thrush such as itching, soreness, irritation, or a thick white discharge, then it would be wise to get treatment from your GP.

If your urine test is reported as normal there is no need to worry. Drinking plenty of water will reduce your chances of having problems with urine infections or cystitis in the future.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
