What Causes Dark Vaginal Bleeding Mid Cycle?

I am taking vaginal tablets. I noticed bleeding similar to a period but the flow is slower. Also the bleeding is one week earlier than a normal period. Is is possible that the tablet may not have been inserted properly and this is causing the bleeding? I have no pain, nor am I taking any other medicine.
