What Causes Dark Vaginal Discharge Before A Menstrual Period?

I am 49 years old and for the past year have noticed a dark stain on the crotch of my panties which usually occurs right before my period. It's not a discharge but almost looks like I swiped dark shoe polish on the crotch of my panties.

Is this due to perimenopause?
