What Causes Dark Vaginal Spotting After Having Safe Sex?

Hi, I m three days late with my period and got a negative on drug store pregnancy test. All signs point to it but I had protected sex. What could be causing this? Could I be pregnant? Also I had dark red spotting like 4 days to a week before my expected period.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Dark vaginal spotting following safe sex and happening also before periods in your case could be as a result of ovulation or endometrial bleeding.
Since the pregnancy test is negative and you had protected intercourse, pregnancy could be unlikely. You should get your periods in time.
However, in case you don't get periods in time, you need to get your urine checked for pregnancy again along with blood tested for beta-HCG levels.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
