What Causes Deformity On Upper Thigh After An Injury?

My wife has a thick "mass" that wraps around her upper thigh. It started out 13 years ago after a small cabinet fell against it at work. Then it was the size of maybe a quarter so we weren't concerned. Since then she has gained weight and now is losing it, but the mass is a visible deformity ! Any ideas ?
