What Causes Delay In Period?

I am very late for my menstrual cycle and I took a test that had a faint positive line on it. the line showed up nearly right away so I know it's probably not evaporation lines. the test was a dollar store brand though so I was wondering how common it is to have a false faint positive and what I should do?
