What Causes Delay In Periods After Taking Low Dose Birth Control Pill?

I am on a low dose hormone birth control I missed a few pills while i was on vacation :( took a pregnancy test which said negative and have been on my pills regularly every day for about 2 weeks now and I have had brown/sometimes red period blood. I have been on this low dose birth control pill for about a year and haven t had a period with it. How long will it take for my body to adjust to me being on the pill again after missing those few days?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sometimes, emergency contraception can change the length of your monthly menstrual cycle, making your next period come as much as a week earlier or a week later than usual. The hormones in the pills can cause unexpected bleeding, but this is not a common or serious side effect. The side effects will probably go away at the next cycle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
