What Causes Delay In Periods When Had Unprotected Sex?

I am 35 years old, 5 ft. 4 in. 114 lbs. Have a 24 month old son and have been having regular periods for 9 months since his birth. My period is always irregular and my cycle usually varies from 30-35 days. It has been about 39 days since my last period. I have been under a little more stress than usual. Then I thought maybe I was pregnant which added to the stress. My husband and I had unprotected sex the day after my last period ended and protected sex 10 days later. I had a little bit of spotting and cramping last night and this morning and took a pregnancy test this morning which came back negative. Once I got the results, bleeding started, and pretty heavily for me. Is this my period, just late? Or is it possible I am pregnant? Or is this premenopause? Or what about a miscarriage? I'm so confused!

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi,

The first thing that is required for this condition is a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy or miscarriage, if test is negative then it can be menstrual bleeding, so a course of tranaxemic acids may be required along with progesterone pills, and this is not menopausal symptoms.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
