What Causes Delay In Periods While On Metformin?

Hi I just started taking metformin for diabetes. I track my period and I have never been late. I am now 11 days late and my last period was very light and short. Does this med cause late cycles or can it mess with my cycle? I have taken a pregnancy test and it was negative. Should I wait longer and try again?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is not normally associated with a delay in periods though persons may react differently to medication.

You can repeat the test in a few days if you do not think it is truly negative. A test takes 11 to 14 days after conception to give an accurate result.

Delayed period may be also due to: (1)high prolactin hormone levels
(2)emotional stress or illness
(3)polycystic ovarian syndrome
(4)abnormal levels of thyroid hormone
(5)physical illness

I hope this helps
