What Causes Delay In Periods With Brown Discharge?

I'm ttc and this month my period is a day or so late and for 3 days i've been having brown discharge on and off. Am I pregnant or is it taking my period a long time to start properly. When I wiped earlier today there was some dark red in my mucus but it's stopped again.
