What Causes Delay In Periods?

My birth control prescription of 2 years ended the end of January. I have continued to have sex with condoms, but now my period is 5 days late. I took a home pregnancy test this morning, and it was negative. Is this a common effect to stopping the pill? I was planning to restart the pill today.
