What Causes Delay In Vaginal Bleeding After Inserting Misoprostol For Abortion?

I have been prescribed Misoprostol tablet to use as a suppository for abortion. I was given tablets and assured this is correct. I followed the doctor s instruction and inserted them vaginally. They do not seem to be dissolving, and I cannot get hold of my doctor. I was led to believe they would dissolve, but it does not seem to be the case. 4 hours later I still feel them in my vagina. I am to repeat dose in about one hour per doctors orders since I do not have bleeding. Is this normal? Should I take my next dose even though they are still in my vagina? Help

Hi,

Misoprostol can be used in the medical termination of pregnancy or abortion, especially for women between 12 and 14 weeks of gestation. The cramping and bleeding usually occurs 1-4 hours after taking the Misoprostol pills for most women.

But, sometimes the cramping and bleeding may start within 4-48 hours. If bleeding doesn't begin within 48 hours, then a repeat Misoprostol dose should be used. The recommended dose of Misoprostol is 800 mcg or 4 pills of 200 mcg Misoprostol.

It is recommended to lie down for at least 30 minutes after you insert the Misoprostol pills to allow the pills to be dissolved and if the pills come back out following the 30 minutes or it seems not to be absorbed into the vagina following the 30 minutes, then it is ok. You can use another one according to your doctor's direction. But before using this medication, you should consult your doctor first and you should use it according to your doctor's guidelines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
