What Causes Delayed Changes In The Menstruation Cycle After Becoming Sexually Active?

My 18year old girlfriend and I had sex on her 8th day. We used condom which didn t break and I ejaculated outside. We didn t make any fluid contact for sure. But her menses which is supposed to start on 29th is getting delayed. It is already 1st(her 34th) day. She usually has 30-35 day cycle. Initially she used to have a 26-28 day cycle but ever since we started to have sex her cycle is getting longer and delayed. She generally gets upset and scared every time it started and this time it is getting worse because I am out of town and she is without me. I really need some help to know if she can end up pregnant or how to get her delayed period started.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there and thank you for turning to us at HCM.

Firstly, I need to be frank and tell you that using protection while having sex is no absolute guarantee against pregnancy.

However, period cycles can be affected by many factors in a lady's life; her diet, activity and stress level as well as weight changes can affect her period. From the information provided, her periods do seem irregular. I understand that she must be feeling extremely stressed and anxious - this too can delay her period. It is most constructive to perform a urine pregnancy test for now. This can allay her anxiety, at the very least. If there is still no period in a week, she should see her regular doctor for a blood test; serum Beta-HCG - this is the most accurate way to test for pregnancy.

I do not recommend taking any medication to jumpstart her period at this point in time.

Thank you and all the best.
