General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Liver failure and hepatitis B infection can affect the menstrual cycle in women. The liver plays an important role in hormone metabolism, including the regulation of menstrual cycles. Liver failure can disrupt the production and balance of hormones, leading to irregular or absent periods.

In addition, some medications used to treat hepatitis B, such as antiviral drugs, can also affect the menstrual cycle. Viread, the medication you are taking, is not known to cause menstrual irregularities, but it may be contributing to the issue.

It is important to rule out pregnancy as a possible cause of the missed periods, as this can occur even in women with liver disease. It is recommended that you take a pregnancy test to rule out this possibility.

When you see your gastroenterologist, they can evaluate your liver function and hormone levels to determine the underlying cause of the delayed periods. They may also recommend further testing or referral to a gynecologist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
