Diabetologist 's  Response
Glycomet SR (Metformin) can cause diarrhoea as one of the common side effect. It can start after relatively stable and event free dosing for years.
I would recommend my patient to take Glycomet SR along with meals (in evening or night) and observe for any change in the symptoms.
If the symptoms persists or if the patient is already taking Glycomet SR along with meals, I would suggest for a drug free trial for a week to look for resolution of symptoms.
The alternative medications depends upon the control of the diabetes and present glucose levels. I would start on Amaryl (glimepiride) 1-2mg once daily and adjust the dose based on the response.
Hope the above information helps. Thank you.
