What Causes Diarrhea And Black Tarry Stools After Taking Gabapentin And Keppra?

I am on Keppra, 1000mg am, 1500 mg pm, and gabapentin 300 mg am/pm, for epilepsy, paxil 30 mg for hot flashes, Zyrtec 10 mg for allergies. I ve noticed i get sudden diarrhea (loose stools) and then i get black tarry stools (not every time, but once a month) after the diarrhea. Is this side effects from the medications? I have had an upper and lower GI test, with only internal hemorrhoids.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

It is possible that Gabapentin can cause diarrhea but also black tarry stools may be due to upper GI bleed or iron tablets consumption or bismuth contain antacids intake etc.

Use tablet pantoprazole before breakfast for one week. If symptoms not improved please consult your physician he will examine by endoscopy and stool for occult blood and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
