What Causes Diarrhea And Blood In Stools Post Treatment For Diverticulitis?

Hi- I had pain in my lower left abdomen about 3-4 weeks ago. The Dr. diagnosed it as diverticulitis and put me on antibiotics for 10 days. I completed the antibiotics and then proceeded to have mild diarrhea and mild cramping for the past 1-2 weeks. I have even noticed a bit of blood in the mucus when I clean myself. No fever but I have not had a significant appetite and when i do eat I need to go to the bathroom not long after. Should I be worried?

Hello,

Once treated, most people start feeling better within a few days. However, you will have to be cautious about your diet. Take fiber rich diet. Take berries, raspberries, beans, lentils, yogurt, oven roasted asparagus, brussels, sprouts, nuts and pop corns, green veggies, etc. Do regular exercises like walking, jogging, etc. Stay well hydrated. Your treating doctor can give you a repeat course of the prescription medicines.

Once you have diverticulitis you should be very cautious of what you eat. Since you are having mild diarrhea and cramping, take boiled food. Take anti diarrheal and PPIs to ease discomfort. Take food that is easily digestible, avoid red meat, cheese, full fat dairy, raw food, etc. Approximately 20% of patients will have another flare-up, or recurrence after treatment. However, If diverticulitis keeps recurring, surgery may be considered & recommended by the treating doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
