What Causes Diarrhea In A Toddler?

Hi, my three year old daughter was sick on the early hours of sunday morning, and it was like nothing i ve seen before (i m a mum of three..) It looked like loose poo and smelt like sulphur. Since then she has barely eaten but she keeps going for a number 2, which smell the same as the vomit. Apart from that she seems ok in herself. I ve kept her off nursery and childcare today, does she need to see a doctor? should i send her back to school tomorrow? i d be grateful for any professional advice. Thank you in advance. Marie.

Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Some advices that I can give to you are :
1)give your baby an oral rehydration solution. These products, have fluids and electrolytes and can prevent or treat dehydration.
2)starchy foods like strained bananas, applesauce, and rice cereal until the diarrhea stops
You should avoid eating anything that can make it worse, including:
• Greasy foods
• Foods that are high in fiber
• Dairy products such as milk and cheese
• Sweets such as cake, cookies, and soda
3)Wash your hands with warm water and soap every time you change your baby's diaper to prevent the infection from spreading. Keep the diaper-changing area clean and disinfected.
4) Keep your child home from day care until he is completely recovered.
If diarrhea don't stop you should do a stool culture to see what is the cause of diarrea. If it is bacterial you should give to your baby antibiotics, or an anti-parasitic drug for a parasite infection.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
