Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi there my mom is on the Alzheimer drug Aricept she has started having diarrhea I think that is how its spelled she is also on a antibiotic and a probiotic as well to help curb the antibiotic mess. I think the airosept is the cause. was at the pharmacy and really couldn t prescribe anything to help any ideas?
Hi, Aricept (donepezil) can cause unexplained diarrhoea in some patients. But it is difficult to assume that donepezil is the sole cause for your mom. Antibiotics can also be the cause. Taking probiotics will help lessen the incidence of diarrhoea associated with antibiotics but does not completely stop it. The information regarding the type of antibiotic regimen used is not mentioned. If the diarrhea perisist even after the antibiotics regimen is over. Then it could be due to Aricept. You can consult your neurologist/ physician regarding alternatives like Namenda (Memantine) that does not cause diarrhoea and whether your mother is eligible for that drug. For acute treatment of diarrhoea, use oral rehydration solutions to replace fluids lost due to diarrhoea. Consult your doctor is the diarrhoea is severe and your mother is experiencing extreme weakness. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful day.
