What Causes Diarrhea While On Metformin?

I,m type 2 diabetic. Was on metformin which gave me diehrea. I went for minor opp and surgeon dnd aneithetis cancelled my opp coz bloods were to high (13.8) they said i should be insulin controlled. Doctor took me off metformin and put me on gliclazide which i still feel same like i want toilet but tired aswel. Can i do this with out meds just diet and exercise ? Had enough its stopping me from working.
