What Causes Diarrhea While Suffering From Collagenous Colitis?

I have been diagnosed with celiac sprue and collagenous colitis 15 years ago. I recently began bouts of diarrhea and was prescribed budesonide and too three course which helped the diarrhea but it always has reoccured. Today I was put on a course of pepto bismol tablets 3 am 3 pm for the 2 month to see if this will control the problem. Comments? I wonder why they did not prescribe another anti diarrhea drug. Also I have had irritable bowel syndrome since 35 years of age. I am now 65 and a female.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hi,

Diarrhea in case of your disease may either be an inflammatory process, maybe prostaglandin-induced or subepithelial collagen deposit.

You will need steroids to control and in addition, may add other anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
