What Causes Difficulty In Breathing After Discontinuing Foracort Autohaler Inhaler?

I was using foracart autohaler 200 for 17 months from Jan 2016 to May 2017. Then I stopped taking it as it was not available in the market (Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India). I did not feel any difficulty after that stoppage till 15th July 2017. Now feel that I am suffering from respiratory problems which started after a climate change. Wanted to know if there is any harmful impact that could have been caused due to discontinuance of the medicine?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Foracort is having formoterol and budesonide. It is commonly used for allergic asthma. It actually controls the asthma and related lung symptoms. So when you suddenly stop it, your asthma becomes uncontrolled and started showing symptoms. Ideally, you should not stop it suddenly. You need to gradually taper it down to prevent symptoms. Sudden stoppage of foracort won't cause any adverse impact. You should restart Foracort 200. Continue it for 3 months. If symptoms are controlled then taper down to Foracort 100. Better to consult pulmonologist for taper down process.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
