What Causes Difficulty In Raising The Arm?

My left arm is feeling dead - hard to lift it in any direction and the top half is very painful. I can't think of anything I have done, the pain came on suddenly yesterday afternoon and has got worse; it was very hard to sleep. What should i do? The doctor can't see me for 48 hours.
