What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing When Suffering From Neck Pain?

Hello-

I strained my neck by painting a ceiling. It has been sore for about 3 days. In addition, when I swallow, I can feel the pain radiate into my neck. Are these muscles/ligaments connected?

I am 54 years old in relatively good shape.
