What Causes Difficulty In Urinating And Nocturia While Suffering From BPH?

I have BPH and have had more and more difficulty urinating over the past year and more frequent nocturia (4-5 times per night). I just had a cystoscopy and uroflow done and I voided completely this time (last time, I retained 75ml urine). During the cystoscopy, the urologist noticed that I have a smaller bladder neck that he thought might be exacerbating my problems with urination. He recommended two options for me. One was to have the UroLift® procedure done and see if that helped me. The other was to just have a TURP done, during which time he would cut the muscle at the bladder neck to allow my urine to flow more easily. My biggest concern is that if that muscle is cut, I might become incontinent. What do you recommend?

Hello,

Cannot say in your particular case, but generally, this occurs in BPH just because of the enlarged prostate. there can be urine backing up, irritation or even infection but there doesn't have to be any of that to cause these symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
