Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Difficulty In Walking After A Total Bed Rest?
I was on total bed rest last year for 10 weeks. almost a year later I am still having difficulty walking at regular pace. There are times my heels pain to the extent I cant step on the floor. sometimes I feel pain in the shins and knees as well. I have trouble walking uphill or climbing stair. 2 floors and am out of breath. Is this all because of the bed rest or something else?
The symptoms seem to be related to the bed rest. After just a few days of bed rest, blood starts to pool in the legs. On standing, this can lead to dizziness and falls.
Immobility also causes the heart to beat more quickly, and the volume of blood pumped is lower. You should start gentle stretching and some minutes of walking every day to help with blood circulation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
