What Causes Difficulty In Walking And Fatigue In An Elderly Person?

My friend is 69, in the hospital. She s on dialysis, has diabetes, She has gotten weaker, difficulty walking, lifting self from chairs and going up a step or two. They ve done a spinal tap, have MRI scheduled around today s dialysis. Neurologist told her they think it s something that starts with a B and is treatable with iv s. She is very forgetful and her children are not stepping up to help her. Could you give me some idea of where to look - all I can think of is Guiienne Barre (sp) Thank you. Joyce Riggin

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Weakness and difficulty in walking can be age-related. Forgetfulness can also be age-related. With advancing age, age-related dementia sets in. Diabetes can also lead to weakness.

I suggest you discuss the possible cause of all symptoms - weakness, difficulty in walking and forgetfulness with your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
