What Causes Difficulty In Walking And Tremors In Hand?

My mother has been on Olanzapine for a couple of years now. Her psychiatrist prescribed it to help her sleep. She suffers from depression and has for many years. She is taking another pill for that. She has developed a problem with moving her legs and one of her hands shake. I saw that one of the side effects of Olanzapine is Parkinson s symptoms. Her psychiatrist took her off the pill and she can t get an appointment with a neurologist for three months. I am really concerned about this Can you give me any insight into what is going on?

Hi,

Yes, these medicines can cause a group of side effects called as extra pyramidal side effects in which some symptoms does resemble with Parkinson's. She needs to be reviewed by the same psychiatrist to adjust her depression or sleep issues as such side effects are never predicted and if occur these can be controlled by adjusting the treatment.

If issue persists a neurologist review to evaluate the movements whether due to basal ganglia involvement in brain or drug induced. Brain imaging may also be needed. Essential tremors, restless leg syndrome etc should also be ruled out to narrow down the diagnosis. Anti cholinergic medicine group may be needed to control the movements later on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
