What Causes Difficulty Speaking And Moving After Keyboarding For A While?

Hello Doctor. Occasionally while keyboarding I find myself unable to move or speak. I am cognizant of my surrounding but unable to move or speak. I have remained in balance on my chair but this is alarming. I am a diabetic, a possible connection. So far this has only happened while keyboarding.

Hello,

You have not given history of your past injury, trauma or disease. But you have history of diabetes. It is good to know that you are cognizant and can assess that you have difficulty in moving or speaking for a while after keyboarding. Sudden loss of voluntary muscle control can be caused by any disease affecting your muscles or nervous system. Developing weakness due to neuropathy / disease may affect motor functioning of legs, nerves, spine or brain.

Dehydration, anxiety (physical / emotional) and stress may also lead to such symptoms. Do not exhaust yourself, take breaks between work. Since you are diabetic, control your blood glucose level at all cost as it may trigger the pathology causing you symptoms and make it worse. Avoid addictions if any. Get clinically examined by a neurologist and investigations (NCV test, nerve biopsy, X-ray, CT, MRI of spine (cervical and upper lumber), blood tests, urinalysis done to detect pathology, so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Conservative treatment combined with physical therapy is effective. For your problem related to movement you can see an orthopedic and physiatrist. In the meantime, maintain correct posture while sitting, standing or sleeping. Take food rich in vitamin B1, B6, B12, Folic acid or supplements. Take food that is good for muscles. Like omega 3 fatty acids, protein and fiber rich food, Calcium, zinc, vitamin D, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
