What Causes Digestive Issues After Eating High Fat Foods?

Dear Doctor, My 14 year old daughter is having problems digesting foods that have any significant fats in them. She feels better when she eats a low-fat, plant based diet with just chicken as a meat source. She also eats very low fat peanut butter for protein. Please advise with your thoughts about possible diagnoses or testing that may be related to this health issue. Thank you, V. Knelly

Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to malabsorption syndrome in which fats and fat soluble nutrients can go undigested. A possibility of enzymes deficiencies required for fat metabolism is also a possibility. Serum amylase and serum lipase, may also be needed to be reviewed. A gastroenterologist review should be sought.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
