What Causes Dip In Blood Pressure After Taking Lisinopril?

I have taken 60 mg of lisinopril today to stop a hypertension surge from 180/120 down to 145/94. Usually this lasts only a few hours and the medication lasted 24 hours but this is the 2nd day in a row this has happnd. I have notified my physician. I don t use diuretics and wonder if I need a new medication?

Hello,

I read your message and understood your concern.

First, i think you must avoid the trigger that keeps your blood pressure high like stress for example or any drugs or foods you may have taken.

Usually, when it does not give the appropriate action the drug is substitute with another drug like nifedipine (calcium-channel blocker) especially during an emergency.

Also, lisinopril itself is an ACE-inhibitor. It used to treat hypertension but not to treat a hypertensive urgency. So, maybe there is a misuse of the drug.

The drug must be taken exactly as recommended by your doctor every day even you feel fine.

I advise to keep monitoring your blood pressure (bp), record the results to pass to your doctor in order to re-evaluate your antihypertensive treatment strategy.

If you are using Lisinopril alone, I think you might need to start a diuretic (e.g. Furosemide). Furosemide can be also used in cases of emergency as injection in order to reduce very high bp.

I hope this was helpful.
