What Causes Discoloration On The Skin While On Medication For Leprosy?

I am a 78 year old woman with MAC and my Doctor at Mayo is looking at prescribing me the leprosy drug as I still have positive bacteria sputum samples. I am worried about the side effects of the drug such as turning my skin reddish, purplish black. Is that the case in most patients? Or not.

Hi,

Many of the leprosy drugs can cause skin pigmentation as a side effect. Generally, it will settle once you wean off from that particular drug.

You can consult a dermatologist for further assistance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
