What Causes Discomfort And Popping Noise Around The Jaw And Neck?

Hi, I have been having a bit of discomfort with my jaw and neck area (either side of Adam s apple) which I think may have been referred pain from costocondritis and a combination of fibromyalgia. when I push down on either side of it, it makes a popping/cracking noise?? Is this normal? I had some issues with reflux which have been easily managed with reflux tablets. Otherwise no other issues noted. Just checking to see whether I need to get this looked at further. Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of discomfort, popping noise around the jaw and Adam's apple, fibromyalgia, costochondritis and reflux.
The crackling sound near Adam's apple on movement is absolutely normal and is a sign of healthy area as the cartilages rub against the cervical vertebrae; its loss is indicative of cancer.
The pain at this region can be due to tenderness of the bones like hyoid and the temporo-mandibular joint akin to costochondritis.
Stress, viral fever can cause or increase these symptoms.
So do not worry, the treatment is same as for costochondritis and take regular medicines.
Keep away from stress and anxiety.
Consult your Doctor if there is no relief with regular medicines to get a prescription for oral steroid in tapering doses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
