Well, as per your explanation it is not looking like
thrush,as thrush represent itself as thick white coating on tongue..
However it can be due to inflammation and ulceration of tongue causing recurring ulcer and discomfort with swelling..
So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..
A tongue swab culture can be done for ruling out any infection..
For now she can start gargling with specialised mouthwash like Magic mouthwash as it can a number of ingredients like numbing agents, antiseptic and antifungal medication,
steroid etc..
She can start taking
lysine and Vitamin B complex supplement..
Take anti inflammatory painkillers like
Ibuprofen..
Gargles with cool water and sucking ice pops can help..
Avoid spicy foods and drink plenty of water..
