What Causes Discomfort In Back After Surgery While On Norco Pill?
My dad 80 yrs old. Had back surgery 3 days ago I brought him home this afternoon, he is having a lot of discomfort gave him his Norco pill , now he is seeing things and picking at the ceiling, he has been on the fentinal patch 25 mg but was taken off today. I am afraid he will get out of bed and fall, he can t do that on his own with out help, buthe might believe he is able to, I ask him if he is ok he says yes, but seems to fall back to sleep and starts talking and picking at things in the air, kind of scares me

thank you for asking your concern and welcome to hcm. the complaints you described seems to be hallucination with or without confusion which are more likely due to fentanyl patch. incidence of this side effect of fentanyl is very less in case of patch but if this symptom is developed just now so we can think of it. clearance of fentanyl through body is about a day so i would like to suggest you to wait for a day more to see whether symptoms subsides or not.
you need to be vigilant in that patient may fall doing so, symptom may increase, if fever develops, any new symptom physical or psychological develop then you have to consult your doctor for further evaluation. in case of urinary tract infection this may be the presentation in elderly in that case antibiotics need to be added. some other sedatives like midazolam or diazepam need to be added if hallucination persists but under the consultation.
